Playing Dress-Up with Contact Paper

No, I'm not going to have you stick contact paper on yourself for fun (although that would be hilarious)... we're talking about playing dress-up with a piece of furniture.  (Okay, I made that sound so weird.  But read on...)

I have a dresser in my guest room that I’ve had since I was a baby. It’s been painted several times, and I updated the handles years ago, but it’s kinda boring.  Plus the top of it is just shot, so I had it covered with a shower curtain (Which I then used as curtains in this room… that’s a blog for another day).

Since the color scheme in this room is black & white, with light blue accents (It's our "travel" room, with pictures of all our travels, so I gave it a Parisian feel)… I decided to dress up this dresser with some snazzy contact paper I found.  It's a black and white swirl type pattern which will go nicely with the all black dresser.

I'm covering the inlaid panel on both sides and the top of the dresser, but I will leave a black border.  I don't want to over do it on the pattern, so I will stop the contact paper dress-up routine after those three.  This is such a simple project, all you need is the contact paper and scissors. However, most people aren’t comfortable “eying” the size as I am, so a tape measure may be handy as well.

Directions:

1. Measure the area you want to cover.
2. Cut contact paper to fit area (Be cognoscente of pattern direction).
3. Peel the backing off the top portion of the contact paper (about 2” worth), and attach to area to be covered.
4. Slowly peel the backing off while smoothing the contact paper, smooth out all bubbles.

That’s it! Remember, contact paper can be removed, and it can be quite fickle, so don’t stress too much if it doesn’t seem to go your way the first time, just peel it off and start again. (Tip: If you leave contact paper on for a long time, it is extremely difficult to get off. Keep this in mind when choosing the piece you want to dress up!)
